U2 Can Watch U2 Perform Live on U2ube

Sorry about that title. This Sunday the Irish rockers U2 will perform a show in California that will stream live on YouTube. From the BBC:

Fans in 16 countries, including the UK, the US, Australia and India, will be able to watch the show at 0330 GMT.

It will be the band’s penultimate concert of the year.

YouTube said it would place adverts around the video “in the normal manner”, and that clips from the concert would be available on the site after the gig ends.

The site will also offer viewers the ability to chat to one another using Twitter, or to give money to Bono’s RED charity via a “donate now” button, while they watch the show.

If U2 is your bag, enjoy the stream on Sunday. Read the full article on the BBC – U2 gig to be streamed on YouTube.

Sony Music Joins Universal on VeVo

Sony has hopped on the VeVo train. In case you forgot, VeVo is Universal Music’s and YouTube’s joint effort to help monetize the popular music video traffic through YouTube. Details:

Sony Music is joining the online video destination [...] though details on the terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Following today’s announcement there remains two majors who have not signed on to the service – Warner Music and EMI.

The news indicates that Vevo is not meant just to be a hub for Universal music videos, but an extensive online destination for music content from many different sources, much like hulu is for TV programming.  While it is not clear if EMI or Warner will join, the addition of a second major puts pressure on them to participate or be left behind.  If all the majors signed onto the service it would make growing a large audience along the lines of hulu more achievable since users could access a much wider catalog of content.

VeVo is still in development, but you can sign up for updates if that’s your thing. Story courtesy of PaidContent.

Apple Dabbling in iTunes Kiosks

According to a recent patent application, Apple is developing plans to deploy iTunes kiosks in which their mobile device users can connect and load up on digital content. Apple is considering launching the kiosks in “virtually any location” including boats, airports, and train stations where users would be stuck traveling and looking for some entertainment to pass time. Check it:

Supplementing the local media server would be a connection between the kiosk and the iTunes Store, which would provide broad access all the audio and video media available through the digital download service. Users could provide their iTunes login and password to download content they select using the keyboard and screen on the kiosk, or swipe their credit card to buy content that may be more readily accessible on the local media server.

These kiosks would be particularly useful for users who are traveling, don’t have access to a wireless connection to access the iTunes Store, but wish to load their iPod, iPhone, computer, or tablet device with a movie or audio album before — or even after — boarding a flight, ship or train, Apple says.

Some of the plan’s details and even some mock up drawings of the kiosks can be had over at AppleInsider.

YouTube Teams Up with Universal Music for VEVO

April 9, 2009 VOD News, YouTube No Comments

VEVO LAS VEGAS! Oh, right…YouTube has announced their partnership with Universal Music Group for VEVO – a “music and video entertainment hub” that features high quality Universal Music content. From the ‘Tube:

This service will blend UMG’s broad catalog of artists and content production capabilities with our video technology and user community — in other words, we’ll provide the technology infrastructure that will power VEVO and host UMG’s extensive library of professionally-created music videos on the new site. This content will be exclusively available through VEVO.com and a new VEVO channel on YouTube through a special VEVO branded embedded player. It launches later this year.

They’re dovetailing this with their recent update to Click-To-Buy, in which YouTube’s partners can sell music via many of the music videos found on YouTube – now in more countries including Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and Sweden. For the full story, click here.
